Selecting Kindergarten Furniture

When selecting kindergarten equipment, we should always keep the child’s comfort and safety in mind. The furniture that we use in setting up a preschool class should be of suitable size. It should also be set up in a manner that ensures maximum space utilization.

Things to Consider When Selecting Kindergarten Furniture

  1. Kindergarten furniture should ensure the child’s confidence and safety. Tables and chairs used for meals should be designed well, taking into consideration children’s tendency to climb over furniture. Ensure furniture is in proportion with the child’s height and sturdy enough for them. Additionally, to prevent cluttering, consider storage options for the chairs and take this into account when selecting furniture. In regards to bookcases, they should be sturdy enough and anchored securely to ensure they do not topple over.
  2. Designated areas should be created to make the classroom child-friendly. Comfortable rugs can be used to create separate activity areas for the children. This will ensure the teacher’s continuous supervision with no physical barriers in between. An organized surrounding with good preschool equipment helps a child to learn valuable life skills in their early years.
  3. Colour is extremely important for young children, as they respond to visual learning. Therefore, colourful furniture is always fun and engaging for children. Especially in regards to learning, for example, asking questions like “what colour is this chair?”
  4. All furniture used in a preschool should not only be safe but also functional. When designing the furniture, it is imperative to ensure the end product has been finished properly, displaying no signs of sharp corners or loose nails. The safety of the child is the most important consideration when choosing furniture.

Kindergarten is primarily a child’s first “guided learning” experience. It is crucial to ensure the classroom they are first introduced to, is thoughtfully and functionally set out. Selecting childcare furniture requires more thought than selecting furniture for adults. There are very specific requirements that children need to benefit all-round cognitive development.
